1.30ct Fancy Yellow VS2 Emerald Cut Diamond

I'm an emerald cut lover. A buddy of mine who's a major league cutter let me know that a stone had recently come to the US. He knows I love Emerald Cuts, and Fancy Yellows - so this stone was a natural for us. I soon as I saw it I knew it was special .

There is something about the light performance that differentiates it from an Emerald Cut. GIA calls it a "Cut Cornered Rectangular Step Cut" Looking at the GIA facet map is no help in understanding the difference, because the facet diagram on this report is identical to one on a stone classified by GIA as "Emerald Cut"

I compared examples of real diamonds to see why GIA drew this distinction for myself. Basically there's a difference in the pavilion - the bottom of the stone. I noticed that the crucial facet which occupies the space directly below the girdle on the cut corners was a parallelogram. On a traditional emerald cut this facet is an equilateral trapezoid. This seemingly small change produces some very cool results. New angles are introduced that cause the light to bounce around a little bit more than in the traditional emerald cut.

This is perfect for fancy colored diamonds. This stone has the total "step cut " personality that you want as an emerald cut love - with a little bit of sparkle introduced in the right places to liven up the stone. I love the cut. Perfectly eye clean VS2.

The color- wow, it's strong for a Fancy Yellow. Plus, due to the aforementioned cut , the yellow is more even than you'll see in most emerald cut yellows.

Speaking of which, natural Fancy Yellow Emerald Cuts are super rare. Looking at the worldwide dealer database, there's 34 GIA Fancy Yellow Emerald Cut Diamonds between 1-1.50cts.

Change the shape to Radiant, there's 962. Cushion? 2341. Yup. 34 Emerald Cuts to 2341 Cushions on the market.

Now let's cull down the 34 Emerald Cuts. If we restrict clarity from IF- VS2, and also set Fluorescence to None or faint - we now have all of 3 diamonds to choose from. That's not why I bought this diamond - I bought it cause it is simply awesome. However, the fact you will not see another like it is kewl.
